General Classes

General classes are geared towards those interested in learning Korean dance and musical instruments. Basic steps are taught in this program, such as breathing and fundamental movements with the body, hand and feet.

2017 – 2018 Overall Course Schedules

The curriculum year starts in April 2017 and ends in March 2018. However, the registrations are open any times, and the performing group will be organized with selected dancers suitable for each event.

The tuition is $480/30weeks. Private lessons are available for certain courses. Please, contact us.

Dance
Korean Dance Foundation

This class focuses on basic movements that are unique in Korean traditional dance and expression. First two levels are focused on the body movements, postures, expressions and some of choreographies.
Advanced level will focus on some specific pieces, such as Court Dances, Folk Dances, Shaman Dances, Buddhist Dances, Mask Dances.

Fan Dance

One of the most popular dances that represents Korean dances. This class will start focusing on mechanical control of fans and will develop artistic expressions using the fans in various formats in groups. The first two levels will focus on basics of Fan Dance and group works. The third level will focus on solos of this style directly taught by Ms. Mi Young Kim.

Small Drum Dance

Small Drum is relatively less demanding in drumming technique. On completing the basic level of Korean Dance Foundation, anyone can join this class.

Drumming
Dharma Drum

Originally the Dharma Drum was played in the Buddhist Temples to signal the gathering of morning and evening homage ceremony. Because of its artistry, this solo drumming is used in various circumstances. The deep and powerful sound and the improvisational rhythms impresses the audience with a significant impact. On completing the Basic Drumming and Technique course, anyone can join this class.

Jangu Foundation

The jangu (Jango) is a two sided drum with different pitches on each side shaped like a sandglass lying down. This class will offer the basic Tchniques of playing jangu and basic patterns of most rhythms played in Korean traditional music and dance.

Seol-Jango

Seol-Jango is a collective solo piece mainly played by the jangu. The rhythms have melodic developments composed of all the variations of 4 major rhythms used in Korean traditional music. This course is an intermediate level for the dancers to be prepared for the Jango Dance. Also, this course has the depth for a drumming course in musical aspect, and the complete piece is performed as a single performance piece.

Basic Drumming Technique

Basic drumming technique is recommended for all the dancers and drummers in context of Korean traditional drumming. This course will provide the very foundational training on drumming in general: technique, counting the beat, reading music both in western and Korean notations.

Jango Dance

This course is an advanced one combining the dance movements and the rhythm played on the jangu. After completing the two drumming courses, the Jangu Foundation and Seol-Jangu, the dancers will have chance to learn and rehearse Jango Dance.

Modeumbuk

Modeumbuk involves relatively less body movements, but the whole body will be in the rhythmic cycle that are played. This course will focus on flexible drumming motions for the melodic developments of the rhythm. Dynamics and expressions are emphasized along with the unison sound of the playing group.

Small Drum Dance

Small Drum Dance doesn’t require much of drumming technique, but it requires the foundation of Korean dance movements and rhythmic understanding. So, this is most approachable and recreational drum dance for a larger group. After completing the Korean Dance Foundation course, anyone can join this class.

O-Go-Mu

O-Go-Mu is very challenging and takes longer time than most of other pieces. When it performed, the magnificence of the movements and sounds immediately absorbs the audience’s attention. This course offers the chance to learn the full choreography of the O-G0-Mu dance and opportunities to perform when the dancers are ready.
